Recently, Yao Cong, a class of 2005 alumnus of the College of Fine Arts at our university, has garnered widespread attention on social media for creating a high-tech homemade robot toy for his son using electronic components and programming skills. When Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning shared the video on her social media platform, she praised it as “straight out of a sci-fi blockbuster,” instantly bringing this “hardcore dad” into the internet spotlight. Major media outlets, including CCTV and China News Service, have also covered the story.
In an interview, Yao Cong shared that building robots has been his lifelong passion. As a child, he loved taking apart radios and creating simple mechanical gadgets. That curiosity never faded—in fact, it grew stronger. Now, as a father, he explores programming and circuits alongside his child. “After my child was born, I made a conscious effort to build robots together with him. We learned by doing—starting with basic circuits and working our way up to debugging code. It’s both a bonding experience and a journey of personal growth,” Yao explained. His dedication and love for technology have driven his creations to evolve from simple models into intelligent, sci-fi-inspired machines.
Looking back on his time at Huaqiao University, Yao Cong spoke with deep nostalgia. “I miss every little detail of the campus—the grass, the bricks, the tiles—each one holds a special place in my heart. But what I cherish most are those late nights in the art studio, working on projects with my classmates until dawn.” he reminisced. He emphasized that the College’s diverse and inclusive environment had a profound impact on him, which helped him connect and apply ideas across different fields. For Yao, his time at Huaqiao University remains an invaluable chapter of his life.
In the video Yao shared, metal gears turn, LED lights glow, and robotic arms move precisely to their programmed commands. The sound of machinery blends with the laughter of a father and son, creating a unique melody of technology and bonding.
This creative approach to fatherhood has amazed netizens, with many saying, “This is what having a cool dad looks like!” But beyond the fun, it perfectly reflects Huaqiao University’s spirit of “learning by doing and breaking new ground.” Through technology, Yao brings warmth; through innovation, he makes learning more engaging—a true example of the Huaqiao spirit in today’s world.
