On January 4, the finals of the 27th Chinese University Basketball League (CUBAL) Fujian Grassroots Tournament concluded at Lin Shuzhen Gymnasium, Huaqiao University. The HQU men's basketball team triumphed over Xiamen University with a 95-60 victory, advancing to the Southeast Division playoffs.
The competition was guided by the Sports Bureau of Fujian Province and organized by China Student Sports Federation and Fujian University Student Sports Association, with the basketball branch of China Student Sports Federation and the basketball committee of the Fujian University Student Sports Association as the hosts. Three teams participated: Huaqiao University, Xiamen University, and Fujian Normal University. Huaqiao University dominated the group stage, finishing first in their group to the finals to compete for the championship against Xiamen University.
In the first leg of the finals on January 2, Huaqiao University narrowly lost to Xiamen University, 73-76, necessitating a win by at least four points in the home game to secure the championship and advance to the CUBAL Southeast Division.
The home game was highly competitive. Energized by their fans, HQU started strong with accurate three-pointers, leading 46-34 at halftime. They extended their lead to 22 points in the third quarter. In the final quarter, the team maintained their advantage, ultimately clinching the championship.
Coach Zhou Lunan expressed gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support, emphasizing the team's unity and shared glory. He stated, “The team showcased strong defensive and offensive efforts in this match. Our next challenge lies ahead in the Southeast Division match, followed by the national competition. Taking it one step at a time truly embodies the spirit of the HQU men's basketball team.”
Key player Guo Yuchen remarked, “This is our fourth consecutive championship in the Fujian CUBAL Grassroots Tournament. We are proud to continue the legacy of our outstanding predecessors!” He also highlighted the importance of adequate rest and recovery for better performances in the future competitions.
